I was was born in the oil camp town of Phillips, Texas, close to Amarillo. I graduated from Tascosa High School and attended Amarillo Junior College and George Washington University where I received my B.A. and M.A. While in Washington, D.C., I worked as United States Congressman Patrick Caffery’s Legislative Assistant. Prior to leaving GWU, I studied overseas visiting Portugal, South Africa, Thailand, and Japan.
I attended law school at the University of Houston Law Center where I interned in the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and United States Attorney’s Office. I was also a member of the International Moot Court Team and the Order of Barristers.
Professionally, I was a trial attorney for the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D.C. I was hired by U.S. Attorney John Clark in San Antonio and served in that position for three years.
Afterwards, I accepted a position as the General Counsel for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Guatemala City, Guatemala. I facilitated the sale of the company and liaison with the franchisor.
Returning to Houston, I entered private practice and started my own firm that handled civil and criminal litigation. During the last twenty-five years I have tried a wide range of criminal cases including sexual assault and drug conspiracy cases. My expertise extends to ATV – recreational vehicles with jury verdicts of $8 million in Edinburgh, Texas and $30 million in Brownsville, Texas. I also represent plaintiffs in legal malpractice cases.
In the last ten years, I have focused my practice on defending attorneys, doctors, and judges, along with other professionals. On a weekly basis, throughout the state, the other attorneys in my office and I are appearing before Evidentiary Grievance Hearings or Disbarment Trials. I am also a frequent speaker on legal and medical ethics, professional topics, and the author of many articles.
In the community, I have served as a volunteer with Amigos de las Americas in Guatemala and on the Amigos Board of Directors. I have served on the Board of Directors of the University of Houston Law Center Alumni Association, and as the President of the Association from 1992-1993. Most recently, I have competed in USA Master Swimming competitions and Senior Olympics Swimming at the local and state levels.
