Formerly a partner at Berding & Weil, Mary Filson is now of counsel to the firm. Her practice now focuses almost exclusively on the interpretation and the amendment of governing documents for community associations. She has been instrumental in developing The GovDoc Project, Berding & Weil's initiative to improve the process and the product quality for associations in need of updated governing documents. LEGAL HISTORY Ms. Filson has practiced law in California since 1986. Prior to joining Berding & Weil in 1993, she was a partner in the San Francisco law firm of Cooper, White & Cooper where she developed an extensive background in corporate and business law with an emphasis on representing clients in their ongoing general business and corporate affairs. She advised clients and prepared necessary documentation in matters ranging from the formation and reorganization of business entities, to employment, consulting and independent contractor agreements, to real estate sales and financing transactions and construction and equipment contracts. At Berding & Weil she has represented community association clients in a wide variety of corporate issues, with a particular interest in working with Boards of Directors to resolve complex and potentially difficult political situations in communities and finding solutions that maintain respect for Board authority and preserve community harmony. This experience is now brought to bear in her current limited practice focusing on governing document issues. EDUCATION HISTORY Ms. Filson received her Juris Doctor in 1985 from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley and her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Southern Illinois University where she completed majors in English and philosophy and minors in dance theater, French, and secondary education. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in American literature from Southern Illinois University. BAR MEMBERSHIPS Member of the State Bar of California and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of California, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, and the United States Tax Court.
