ABOUT JERRY SHILES Jerry Shiles became interested in family law and estate and special needs planning in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps and while assisting a special needs relative. During 20 years in Germany, Shiles assisted clients in estate planning, family law, and related litigation in Germany and the U.S. He also taught university courses and hosted a legal program for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. Mr. Shiles’ focuses on estate and elder law planning, Medicaid, probate, estate litigation, business transactions, and family law (adoptions, guardianships). He has lectured at seminars and clinics in Europe, Japan and the U.S. and regularly conducts seminars for attorneys, CPAs, financial planners, nursing home administrators, and others. He authored a weekly newspaper column for over 25 years and is a frequent guest on radio and television programs. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Mr. Shiles is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys, the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Oklahoma City Tax Lawyers Group, the Planned Giving Counsel of Oklahoma, the Judge Advocates Association, and the Family Law, Trusts & Estates Sections of the American, Oklahoma, Nevada, and District of Columbia Bar Associations. MILITARY EXPERIENCE Mr. Shiles is a retired Army Colonel who served over 33 years, active and reserve, as a Staff Judge Advocate; Deputy Chief of the Army's Legal Assistance Division; Chief of Legal Assistance, U.S. Marine Corps; Inspector General; Deputy Chief of Staff Resource Management; Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel; Battalion Commander; and three tours as a Brigade Commander in Germany and Bosnia-Herzegovina, Fort Belvoir, VA and Fort Sill, OK. Mr. Shiles has received the American Bar Association Distinguished Service Award and Department of Defense Meritorious Civilian Service Award and Legion of Merit. He is listed in Who's Who in the Leadership of the United States, Who's Who of American Lawyers, Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals, and in the Martindale-Hubbell Registry of Preeminent Lawyers in the U.S. Mr. Shiles is active in community affairs, including the Vance (Air Force Base) Development Authority; Military Affairs Committee of Chamber of Commerce; Reserve Officers Association (State Judge Advocate, three-term National Judge Advocate, four-term State President, and 16 year National Councilman); American Legion (three-term State Judge Advocate); and Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame (Ambassador, Director of Operations, and Chairperson). He is licensed to practice law in Oklahoma, Nevada, and the District of Columbia, and before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals (9th, 10th and Federal Circuits) and U.S. Tax Court. EDUCATION Mr. Shiles earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Utah and completed his under-graduate degree in Business Management, with honors, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. PERSONAL Jerry and Donna live in Shawnee, Oklahoma with numerous dogs, cats, and horses. They have two married children, Phil and Lauren, both of whom live in Kansas, and two granddaughters, McCartney Grace and Emmalee Jean.
