James Cohen, an Associate Principal at Arup, has over 30 years experience in engineering failure investigation, mitigation, response, repair and rehabilitation and has been recognized as an expert in engineering investigations.
Projects have ranged from historic masonry and glass structures and landmark buildings to buildings still under construction, industrial facilities, telecommunications towers and tower cranes. Materials have included stone, brick and concrete masonry, timber, glass, steel, concrete, cables, slings and more. Besides repair and renovation, design experience has included emergency shoring, seismic, blast, wind and flood mitigation projects.
Among current projects are several circa Civil War era buildings, a glass conservatory, new luxury condominiums, industrial structures and construction cranes.
He has provided expert testimony in numerous collapse and other engineering litigation projects involving fire, wind, flood, deterioration, construction, design, and delays for residential, commercial and industrial buildings. He has also appeared as an expert on construction failures for MSNBC.
Mr. Cohen is the past chair of numerous technical committees in ASCE and NYAS.l He has been a guest speaker on failure engineering at Cornell University, Rutgers University, Municipal Engineers of New York, New York Academy of Sciences and others. He has been recognized as an expert in concrete, roofing, structures, telecommunication towers, failure investigation and collapses during testimony.
Mr. Cohen was recipient of the Partner In Mitigation fellowship sponsored by ASCE and IBHS to FEMA and is a former Advanced Structures Specialist on the New Jersey USAR team. He has given lectures on failure investigation, emergency response and other topics at various professional organizations and universities.
